A Survey of Hungarian History


This Hungarian history class will meet on Google Meet for 5 sessions: February 23 and March 1, 8, 15, 22 Class will meet on Fridays from 12-1pm, ET

During each session we will learn some general information about Hungarian history including geography, the important people, and the change of the landscape through the lens of events in world history.

  1. 3rd – 10th century: From Pannonia to Hungary: The Seuso Treasure, marches near Szeged, Vásárhelyi Pál, The Great Flood, etc.
  1. 1000 – 1699 The Middle Age in Hungary: Why was it special? Famous kings. between the Turkish Emperor and Habsburgs. Independent Transylvania and the Hungarian Saints: István, László, Erzsébet and Margit; the Castle of Eger; Zrínyi Miklós, Bethlen Gábor, etc.
  1. 1700 – 1825 Hungary as a part of the Habsburg’s Empire: Rákóczi Ferenc the Second, How and why the nationalities came to Hungary, the origins of porcelain production in Herend, etc.
  2. 1825 – 1914 Revolution and Compromise (1867) Ottrish Hungarian monarchy; the Hungarians and the other nationalities in the Empire – Kossuth, Széchenyi István, Petőfi Sándor, Deák Ferenc, Eötvös Loránd, the Ganz family, Jedlik Ányos, etc.
  3. 1914 – 1989 Wars and Communism: Tisza István, Károlyi Mihály, Kun Béla, Horthy Miklós, Bethlen István, Szálasi Ferenc, Rákosi Mátyás, Kádár János, etc.

Panni Békés is the instructor for this class. She has taught history, literature, and Hungarian grammar in Hungary. She loves traveling, learning other languages, and cooking. She lives in Budapest, Hungary with her husband.
